Success

The launch for the “Kid@Heart” tee shirts was a big success. The shirts are just about sold out!! I just got off the phone with the wonderful owner of Timebomb, Brick and he has informed me that there is one large available online and three double extra larges left. Hurry and get them before they are gone!! I will keep you updated on when we will have more shirts.
I saw the first person in public wearing the tee at the Drum Bar in Rivers Casino. His name is Anthony and he loved the shirt and the foundation. Thank you Anthony for making my Saturday night! You rock!

Anthony and myself at Drum Bar
We are looking to have our first event in March! We would like to go to a huge gym for a Saturday night of basketball and volleyball. It’s just going to be a great time for people to have something other than drinking on a weekend night.
I also got to meet with a wonderful lady named Nancy who is going to be doing so much for the foundation. She is full of great ideas and I am really looking forwards to working with her and getting things accomplished. She has sent our paper work to the state and now we are waiting for them to send us a packet to fill out and send back. I am so happy she is helping because she is focused, organized and really believes in this cause.
Now on a personal level, I have been focusing so much on getting things done that I need to readjust my priorities and get into the gym. I have been slacking a little and haven’t been feeling good about it. My eating hasn’t been all that great either. A few days ago I was able to get out in the nice weather with Bonics. We took a long walk around my neighborhood. He did some jogging and felt really good afterwards. I am really proud of him and the big changes he has made to his life. It’s always going to be a struggle to make the healthy choices but I am sure in time it is going to get easier.
I read an interesting fact the other day. If you are walking and listen to music, you are more likely to walk longer and burn more calories than if you don’t have any tunes on. I really thought about it and I have to agree. I am sure I would walk longer if I had something more to entertain me. I am just now finding that there are tons of small changes that you can make that will make a big difference but don’t think about. I will always let you know when I find the good ones.
Thank you again for getting your tee shirt. Remember there are still a few shirts left and if you aren’t able to get it now, I will let you know when more come in. Visit www.timebombshop.com, Timebomb in Pittsburgh, and Shop412 in the South Side Works.

HERE IT IS!!!!!!!!!

Bonics Heart Beats Foundation

On Thursday, December 2, Brandon “DJ Bonics” Glova was rushed to the hospital after experiencing extreme pain and discomfort in his  shoulders and chest. Glova had returned from a 60 city tour as the DJ for emerging hip hop MC Wiz Khalifa just two weeks prior, and despite being only 30 years old, he was having a heart attack.

“I had never experienced such a combination of pain and fear. They called it a heart attack; I call it a harsh reminder of how sweet life is,” Bonics recalled.

Since recovering from this life-threatening episode, Glova has created the Bonics Heart Beats Foundation, which will promote heart health and a healthy lifestyle specifically to adults under the ageof 40.

To build some momentum for the Bonics Heart Beats Foundation and further the cause, Glova has enlisted vitaminTHICK, a street lifestyle fashion company out of Boston, to collaborate on a special edition t-shirt design. The concept for the shirt, entitled “Kid@Heart,” is inspired by the importance of remaining youthful in both thoughts and actions, advice by which Glova now lives.

“When we were younger, we would run around and play as if we were invincible,” said Glova. “Too often as adults our health becomes an excuse to

The shirt design features a proud kid clenching a lunchbox by his waist. His silhouette, which is filled with an image of the universe, represents the endless possibilities and dreams associated with youth. The character’s oversized glasses are a playful reference to Glova’s signature style.

Andrew Shedd, vitaminTHICK’s Creative Director, further elaborated on the project, “Fans and culture junkies alike often perceive talent like Bonics in a limited capacity in comparison to his true depth of character. Bonics' experience was a very human one, and the "Kid@Heart" concept captures that human element with a degree of warmth and sensitivity that really resonated with us. Responding proactively as he did with the intent to deliver a message that has such a genuine earnestness and positivity speaks to that depth of character in a way scarcely touted in mainstream media."

The Bonics and vitaminTHICK "Kid@Heart" collaboration t-shirt goes on sale this Valentine’s Day (2/14), and can be purchased online at

A New Day!

Ok, I think I am finally over the Steelers losing the Superbowl. I have been getting excited about a milestone for the foundation! We are going to launch our Kids At Heart shirts on one of my favorite days, February 14th.  As soon as the shirts go on sale I will be sure to post the website they can be purchased on. All of the proceeds are going to the Bonics Heart Beats Foundation.

I feel like I am moving 1000 miles an hour and have not had a pit stop to change my tires. I have so many ideas and I just need to put them in place then hit the easy button. The great thing is that I do have so many ideas. It’s better than having none. I would like to share one of them with you. I want to interview the doctor that performed the stint surgery on Bonics and ask him some questions like, since you became a doctor have you seen a rise in young people coming in with heart attacks? What was going through your mind as you were clearing the artery of a 30 year old? I am really curious, so I can’t wait to get them answered. If you have any questions you think I should ask please let me know.
I want to take a second to thank you guys for all of your support that you are giving Bonics and me. I have received so many comments and well wishes over Facebook and Twitter as did Bonics. We don’t want this to just be our foundation. We want everyone to take part and feel like it’s yours too. We can’t do this without you! Bonics and I were just talking today about how good we feel about all of this and how things are starting to fall right into place. Thank you again from the bottoms of our healthy hearts!!

Take a journey with me

February 3, 2011
Thursday December 2nd 2010 I got a phone call that terrified, angered and just about changed that way I would look at life and how I viewed the people in my life. I have received this kind of phone call a few times before but this time I was shocked to get this kind of call from the person on the other line to say the least. “Jamie, I am having a heart attack and have to go into immediate surgery to have a stint put in my heart….I’m scared”.
The person on the other line? One of my closest friends 30 year old Dj Bonics. No, there is no typo, 30 years old! I was stunned and even though I heard him perfectly clear the first time, I could only get the word WHAT? out. He repeated himself and started to cry. I quickly gathered up my things from 96.1 Kiss Stuff A Bus and took off for St. Clair’s hospital.
So by now you might be wondering how this started and what exactly happened the 4 days spent at Bonics' bedside in the hospital and how myself his other friends and family dealt with this. Well, I am going to tell you and fill you in beginning to end through this journey Bonics and I are about to take together.
We are in the very baby beginning stages of starting a foundation call the Bonics Heart Beats Foundation. Our main goal is to bring awareness to everyone that heart failure doesn’t discriminate by age, sex or race it can in fact strike anyone. Our first order of business is to sell awesome shirts to help raise money to throw a big event in the summer. We were thinking maybe a kickball tournament or water balloon fight. Just something fun to get us all off the couch and get MOVING!!
I don’t want another phone call like the one I received in December from anyone. So if there is anything I can do about it…. Damn it I am doing it!! Bonics got a huge wake up call and is not taking his second chance for granted! He is grabbing it and running full speed ahead to make sure he can reach out to as many people as possible to educate.
So the journey I want to take you on is getting through making a (cross your fingers) successful foundation and things I learn along the way along with telling you Bonics' story. I also need lots of help so any and every suggestion would be sooo appreciated. I also promise you that I will figure out this whole blog thing like adding pics and cool things like that.
More info on the tee shirts are to follow in my next post! Oh and maybe a little info on who I am too!!
xoxo
